Swimming and boating classes are small, and while safety is always of paramount importance, we also want children to have fun in and on the water.
Every day, every child takes an American Red Cross swim class based on his or her ability, and every camper must pass a swim test before swimming in deep water or participating in boating activities. Daily general swims allow even the least skilled to enjoy playing around in the water. More advanced swimmers may take on challenging endurance swims or help teach younger children, and the most hearty may elect a pre-breakfast polar bear dip.
Campers learn canoe and kayak safety and paddling on our lake, then branch out for longer trips (sometimes several days) to extend their skills in areas like the St. Regis canoe wilderness. Beginning sailors learn the basics on small boats at Camp, then after practicing on larger craft and having attained the status of “captain,” they, too, head out for more challenging waters, like those of the nearby Saranac Lakes.
